TransAmerica Trail – Day 4

Hot Springs NC to Knoxville TN

We’ve been without cell signal since early yesterday afternoon and I’m about to go crazy!!   I need internet so we got up before the sun at 5am and even though the fog was thick we started driving the narrow mountain roads with a gazillion switchback turns. Lucky us we saw three deer along the way but only had to slam on the brakes once.  I think we may have locked something in the brakes because I kept smelling brakes burning on the downhill curves but after several miles it went away.

We drove for an hour or so and stopped in Waynesville NC for coffee.  There was a Walmart nearby so we went back to sleep for another hour in the parking lot. It’s great how easy the top goes up and is ready to sleep.   We’d prefer campgrounds but in the east we found it easier to find a Walmart than a free campsite.    After our nap we woke up refreshed and continued on into Smoky Mountain National Park (aka tourist hell)  We traversed the entire length of the park, mostly on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The views were spectacular and we even saw a bear along the road but the traffic and tourists tested our patience like nothing on the trip so far.

Once again we couldn’t find a good campsite so tonight we’re in a Candlewood Suites. Hot shower, internet, even a stove so we cooked burgers in our room… heaven!!!
